The Covid-19 pandemic has taught us so many different things, but it has especially highlighted the inequities in our communities. I work with a non-profit afterschool program that partners with various schools across the San Francisco Unified School District. When everything closed down, we were very privileged to be able to work from home. This was a huge shift for us and our youth as it is for many people across the country taking classes and working online. Working with teachers and holding enrichment classes myself, there is always a lot of concern about students without their cameras off. This painting is about the empathy we must have for these students and everyone as the world moves even more into this online space. It is not easy to invite strangers into your house under normal circumstances, and many people don’t have their own quiet spaces, or reliable tech and wifi. Maybe the best service we have in our homes is in an unconventional and inconvenient space such as the laundry room? We have to lower our expectations for one another.
