Hang in There, 2021

This painting is about being an adult but still feeling like a child.
When you are a kid running around on the playground you have so much support all around you. The monkey bars are the perfect example of this: they give you a challenge-get across to the other side- but also offer you a low stakes place to fail. As I have gotten older, and changed from student and youngest of my group, to leader and teacher of youth half my age, I am thinking a lot about the support I had growing up(am lucky to still have to some extent) and also the way that the security, certainty, and ground beneath your feet disappears as we head further into our futures.
I made these pieces contemplating how I can offer safe places for my students to fail, learn, grow, and prepare for their own uncertain futures and also as a way to celebrate the joy of not being alone in this feeling of “hanging in there” till we all get to the other side.
